“What A Fool” and “The Underground Man” came from a visit I had with a brilliant composer/producer named David Ricketts. I had met him some 30 years ago in L.A. when he was in a duo on A&M Records called David and David. A few years ago, I was playing a set at Room 5 in LA and he was sitting in with the band after me so he heard my set. We hadn’t seen each other in many years. Then he e-mailed me a few days later and asked if we might get together and try and come up with something. So he drove up to my house on the Central Coast and played me some “starts.”

Two of them grabbed me immediately so I worked on them for days after he left until I had them arranged the way I liked them, and all the lyrics completed. Then I went into the studio and, using what he had already contributed instrumentally, I combined it with some of my players, sang and mixed them and e-mailed the finished tracks to him. I was very excited at his response, and I hope to write more with him in the future. Shatter really started to take shape after that collaboration.
